Split on a budget: beaches
Let's go to the beach!
After a wild night out, there are a couple of hangover remedies you can apply to get your energy back. Since you've probably spent your night with Split's best boat party (us 😎), the most obvious and highly recommended activity to try as a treatment is to go to the beach, of course. There's nothing like the peaceful and serene Adriatic Sea to bring you back to life. Luckily, there are several options to choose from for your beach day in Split.
First the most iconic in the town — Bacvice, a large sandy beach, always packed with people. You can sunbathe all day, get ice cream, swim once you get past the shallow part (it takes a while to reach shoulder depth). This is where picigin was born — a game you can easily try yourself if you bring a small, ideally non-absorbent ball. Instead of us explaining the rules here, you can simply ask one of the locals there who will be playing it already if they can teach you, though you should know, some of them take it pretty seriously.
Next, from Bacvice beach if you head east you have a number of beaches you can reach by walking. There's Ovcice — a smaller gravel beach.
Firule — a sandy beach with a deep cove giving it a more secluded feeling, though it's still always bustling with people.
Trstenik and Znjan — a little farther along, these gravely beaches are the longest in town, and are accompanied by cafés. They also stretch along a popular recreational spot for biking, roller-skating and running.
If you're more of an outdoorsy person and enjoy spending time among trees, the best place for you is the forest-park Marjan. It's a favourite biking, running and walking spot for the locals, where you can spend an entire day in nature. We highly recommend renting out some bikes and riding through the park for efficiency as well as the experience. Get used to the sound of cicadas while you're there, and enjoy the peaceful and tranquil natural beaches all along the forest coast. Here is a quick little guide to some of the most famous beaches on Marjan.
Prva voda is a gravel beach located near the park gates, and a popular place for families with children, a little farther into the park you'll eventually get to Bene — a great place to sit down, have some coffee and ice cream, or a swim in the sea. Bene also has some sports activities to offer: a football field and a tennis court, which you can rent out for a game.
Next up, Kasuni is a favourite among tourists for its beautiful view of the forest and a beach bar situated right there, if you want more of a beach party vibe, this is the place.
Now you've almost circled the entirety of Marjan, and if you keep going, you'll pass Kastelet — a beautiful long gravel beach, on your way back into the city.
We haven't covered all of the beaches, but we'll stop here or this could go on for hours. Besides, you might do some exploring on your own to find little ideal sunny spots. Just don't underestimate the heat, and bring some sunscreen. That's probably all you need for now. Remember to enjoy your time, pay attention to the present moment and we're sure we'll be seeing you again. And lastly, if you take anything away from your stay here, remember what we say in Split: samo pomalo, take it easy.
